15 พฤษภาคม 2564 สำนักข่าว เอพี รายงานว่ากองทัพอิสราเอลปฎิบัติการโจมตีทางอากาศ ในฉนวนกาซา ของปาเลสไตน์
เหตุการณ์ในครั้งนี้ส่งผลให้จาลา ทาวเวอร์ ซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งสำนักงานของสื่อมวลชน เช่นเอพี สำนักข่าวอัลจาซีรา และสื่อท้องถิ่นอื่นๆ ถูกทำลายเสียหายในพริบตา
ทั้งนี้มีรายงานว่าก่อนปฎิบัติการดังกล่าว ฝ่ายกองทัพอิสราเอลแจ้งเตือนผ่านทางโทรศัพท์ว่าจะโจมตีอาคารแห่งนี้ โดยให้เวลาอพยพผู้คนเพียงแค่ 1 ชั่วโมง ระหว่างนั้นเจ้าหน้าที่สำนักข่าวมีการร้องขอเวลาเพิ่ม หวังจะขนย้ายอุปกรณ์ต่างๆ ออกจากสำนักงานแต่ไม่เป็นผล กระทั้งเกิดเหตุระเบิดขึ้น
ภายหลังเหตุโจมตี สำนักข่าวอัลจาซีรา ประณามการกระทำในครั้งนี้ เพราะถือเป็นการสกัดกั้นการทำหน้าสื่อ และเรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลอิสราเอลแสดงความรับผิดชอบต่อการกระทำดังกล่าวด้วย
